NNPC Rejects Gas Shortage Claim, Faults NISO Over Power Drop

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) says gas is available to support power generation in the country.

The company also faulted  claims by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) that low electricity generation is due to gas constraints.

Ia statement on Thursday, NISO had blamed the current low power generation on limited gas availability and low water levels for hydropower.

Reacting in a press statement on Saturday, NNPC’s  Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, disclosed  that the  its gas transportation network operated by the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC) Limited remains 100 per cent available.

He quoted that there is no known constraint on gas transportation at the moment and the network is ready to transport gas to any off-taker willing to take it.

NNPC Ltd disclosed that it has recorded 10 per cent growth in gas production in 2026, driven by sustained investments in gas supply resilience and infrastructure.

It further clarified that commercial supply, gas transportation, and power plant readiness are three different issues that should not be mixed up.

According to the company, while gas may be available and the transportation network ready, power generation could still be low if power plants are on maintenance, undergoing commissioning, or not ready to take gas for other reasons.

It noted that gas transportation charges account for only about 10 per cent of electricity tariffs, while 90 per cent relates to gas supply and other costs associated with electricity generation.

It expressed its commitment to supporting power generation through reliable gas transportation and called for closer collaboration between gas suppliers, transporters, generation companies and NISO.

The company advocated the need for a joint review to identify and address any actual bottlenecks in the gas-to-power value chain, rather than attributing low generation to gas unavailability.
