Contributory Pension Scheme pensioners in Lagos State have threatened to stage what they called the “mother of all protests” to demand payment of their pension enhancement and wage award.
The Chairman, Nigeria Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme, NUPCPS, Lagos State Council, Comrade Michael Omisande, gave the directive on Monday after a meeting with the Permanent Secretary, Public Service Office, Sunkanmi Oyegbola.
According to Omisande, the union had in January 2026 submitted a template to the state government, and LASPEC said approval had been given to engage an actuary. However, nothing has been done since.
“We have communicated a 19-day ultimatum to Mr. Governor to credit the accounts of pensioners on the pension increases/wage award, or face protest action tentatively fixed for August 31, 2026,” he said.
Omisande added that the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, and the State Commissioner of Police have been notified for adequate protection.
At the meeting were the Director General of LASPEC, Babalola Obilana, and Executive Director, Finance, Muyiwa Oshin. Obilana said the Governor had summoned him and given a directive, but did not specify a date for implementation.
Also present were leaders of NUPDBS, Comrade Olufemi Olarewaju and Comrade Olukayode Bada. The Lagos NLC Chairman, Comrade Funmi Sessi, also attended and urged LASPEC to expedite action.
Omisande said the national body of NUPCPS has backed the Lagos council and that traditional and social media would be used to mobilise pensioners.
“It is a sacrifice we must render for our financial emancipation. I strongly believe that the money can be paid if the government really wants to pay within the time frame,” he said.
The Lagos NLC Chairman, Comrade Funmi Sessi, who attended the meeting, appealed to government to act fast to avoid confrontation.
