Former Accord Party presidential candidate, Prof. Christopher Imumolen, has withdrawn from the 2027 presidential race and endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, Imumolen said the decision followed consultations with the leadership of the Accord Party and was made in the interest of the nation.
He said supporting President Tinubu’s re-election is a patriotic move aimed at promoting Nigeria’s unity, stability, and long-term development.
Imumolen listed ten reasons for his withdrawal, starting with what he described as a shared vision with the President on economic transformation, education, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, industrialisation, and national development.
He added that the Accord Party will work to mobilize support for Tinubu’s re-election bid.
He also commended Tinubu’s leadership, describing him as a resilient leader with the capacity to navigate Nigeria’s political and economic challenges. He further commended the President’s political experience, commitment to institutional reforms and ability to build consensus across political divides.
He expressed confidence that the Tinubu administration’s economic policies would eventually deliver sustainable growth, despite current economic difficulties.
He also argued that continuity in governance and policy implementation would strengthen investor confidence, create jobs and consolidate ongoing reforms.
He added that President Tinubu has demonstrated the ability to identify and empower capable leaders while serving as a bridge between Nigeria’s older generation of political leaders and the emerging generation.
He maintained that his political aspiration had always been motivated by service to the nation and not the pursuit of public office.
“My aspiration has always been to serve Nigeria and not merely to occupy public office. Whenever the national interest is better served through unity and strategic collaboration, I will always choose Nigeria above personal political ambition,” he stated.
Imumolen called on members of the Accord Party, his supporters, young Nigerians, professionals and other citizens to rally behind the President in the 2027 election.
