Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, Mr. Peter Obi, has sued President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government over alleged threats to his life ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In the suit filed Monday at the Federal High Court, Abuja, Obi, through two lawyers, Mr Okere Kingdom Nnamdi and Mr Joseph Enemona Amen, and the Incorporated Trustees of Rights For All, asked the court to compel the FG to provide him maximum security.
Listed as 1st to 6th defendants are President Tinubu, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the State Security Service, the Commandant-General of the NSCDC, and Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
The applicants, in suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1648/2026, are praying the court to declare that Obi has the fundamental right to life and to live without fear, discrimination, threat of assassination, intimidation or harassment under Section 33(1) of the 1999 Constitution.
They also want the court to restrain the government and its agents from subjecting Obi to “politically motivated coercion, threat to life, bullying, harassment, assault, intimidation and victimisation” on account of his political ideology, ethnicity, religion or for any reason whatsoever.
The suit cited alleged threats made against Obi by Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
The applicants prayed the court to declare that the governor’s statements — that Obi’s life and security were not guaranteed in Edo State and that he should not enter the state without the governor’s clearance — were baseless, illegal, unconstitutional and an abuse of power.
They described the comments as anti-democratic and tantamount to executive rascality.
