Nigeria and Qatar have strengthened bilateral ties in the energy sector following high-level talks between Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Mahmood Yakubu, and the leadership of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, GECF.
Ambassador Yakubu on Sunday hosted the GECF delegation led by Secretary-General, Dr. Philip Mshelbila, in Doha.
The discussions centered on expanding cooperation in the global gas industry and deepening Nigeria’s strategic partnership with the Doha-based organisation.
The engagement comes as Nigeria continues to position natural gas as a key driver of its energy transition and economic diversification agenda. Abuja is seeking stronger partnerships with gas-producing nations to attract investment, expand infrastructure, and enhance energy security.
The GECF is headquartered in Doha and serves as a platform for leading gas-producing countries to coordinate on gas development, markets, and energy policy. Nigeria remains one of its major members.
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Gas, Ekperikpe Ekpo, currently serves as Chairman of the forum’s ministerial meetings.
Ambassador Yakubu explained that the meeting reflects Nigeria’s commitment to deepening economic diplomacy with Qatar and leveraging multilateral platforms like the GECF to advance the country’s energy interests.
The talks form part of his broader engagements in Qatar aimed at promoting trade, investment, and energy cooperation between both countries.
Earlier on Sunday, the envoy met with Qatar’s Minister of Labour, Ali bin Saeed bin Samikh Al Marri, where discussions focused on expanding employment opportunities for Nigerians in the Gulf nation.
According to the ambassador, the initiative is in line with the Federal Government’s 4D Doctrine of foreign policy, which places strong emphasis on democracy, development, demography and diaspora engagement as pillars of Nigeria’s international relations.
The discussions explored avenues for creating more employment opportunities for qualified Nigerian professionals and skilled workers, while strengthening bilateral cooperation in labour mobility and workforce development.
The two engagements underscore the growing scope of Nigeria-Qatar relations beyond traditional diplomacy, with increasing emphasis on energy cooperation, investment and human capital development.
The engagements also reflect the government’s commitment to leveraging diplomatic missions to attract investment, deepen strategic partnerships and create economic opportunities for citizens abroad.
