The successful release of pupils and teachers abducted from Oriire Local Government Area was a major test of its resolve against criminal elements, Oyo State Government has said
Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who disclosed this in a statement on Friday, said that the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde refused to pay ransom despite pressure to take what he called a “quick-fix” approach.
According to him, paying bandits would only encourage more kidnappings and strengthen criminal operations.
“By refusing to throw money at bandits for a temporary solution, this government has shown courage and a long-term commitment to tackling kidnapping and banditry,” he stated.
The government described the release of the abductees as a victory for resilience and principled leadership, and expressed gratitude that the victims had regained their freedom after weeks in captivity.
He said: “We are happy to report to our people in Oyo State that our children and teachers at Oriire have been released from captivity.”
He added that the government remains determined to confront insecurity through pragmatic and sustainable measures, rather than actions that could embolden criminal gangs seeking to destabilise the country.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of residents while continuing to work with security agencies to rid Oyo State of kidnapping and other criminal activities.
