A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the remand of African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, in Kuje Correctional Centre over a defamation case.

Justice Mohammed Umar gave the order in a brief ruling. Sowore will remain in custody pending the hearing of his motion to stay an earlier order revoking his bail and issuing a bench warrant.

The court will rule on the stay application at the next adjourned date which was fixed for June 24.

Justice Umar also dismissed Sowore’s previous application seeking the judge’s recusal from the case on the ground of alleged bias.

The motion for stay was filed by the defendant’s new lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN in the ongoing criminal proceedings before Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

Justice Umar had, on June 16,2026 revoked a bail granted to Sowore following his failure to appear in court his trial.

In a ruling on an oral application made by the lawyer to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde, SAN, Justice Umar also issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

The DSS is prosecuting Sowore for allegedly making false claims against the person of President Bola Tinubu by referring to him as “a criminal” in a post he made on his “X” and Facebook accounts.
