The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Area Command, has thwarted a suspected impersonation scheme after intercepting military uniforms and a large consignment of cannabis valued at N259.68 million along the Idiroko border corridor, Ogun State, South-West Nigeria.
The Acting Customs Area Controller (CAC), Deputy Comptroller of Customs (DC) Oladapo Afeni, disclosed the seizure during a press briefing at the Command’s headquarters in Idiroko
According to him, officers acted on intelligence to intercept a luxury bus without a registration number. A search of the vehicle uncovered military uniforms alongside high-grade cannabis believed to be part of a coordinated attempt to undermine national security.
“The seizure of military uniforms is particularly worrying given the current security situation. Unauthorised possession of such uniforms is often linked to impersonation, where criminals disguise themselves as security personnel to commit crimes or facilitate the movement of contraband undetected,” Afeni said.
A physical examination of the seized items revealed 197 camouflage trousers and shorts concealed in unmarked cartons, five camouflage two-piece sets, 32 mixed camouflage undergarments, 32 camouflage tops, 154 strains of synthesised cannabis indica, popularly known as Canadian loud, and seven parcels of Colorado, among other items.
He urged residents to provide timely information to help keep communities safe.
“Through dedication and stronger synergy with sister agencies, we are committed to tackling the dual threats of smuggling and insecurity head-on,” he added.
Receiving the items, the Deputy Commander of Narcotics, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Idiroko Special Area Command, Ganiyu Adeyoye, described the seizure as a major breakthrough.
“This one is particularly notable because suspects were involved, which means that those involved will be brought to justice,” he said.
