A gas pipeline fire broke out along Agege Motor Road at Ile Zik inward Agege in the early hours of Monday, prompting a full-scale emergency response from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.
LASEMA said its Eagle Response Team arrived at about 3:13 a.m. after distress calls to the 767 and 112 emergency lines. Responders found a Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited pipeline engulfed in flames.
No casualties or injuries had been recorded as of Monday morning, the agency said. Officials attributed this to the rapid deployment of emergency teams who evacuated the area and secured the site to protect residents, motorists, and businesses.
A multi-agency operation is ongoing involving LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team, the LASEMA Response Unit, and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
Teams set up containment lines to stop the fire spreading to nearby buildings, fuel stations, and other infrastructure. Traffic officials diverted vehicles to ease congestion.
The cause of the fire has not been determined. Investigations are underway with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and NNPCL safety officials.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu said the situation was under control and that the state’s emergency plans had been fully activated.
“Protecting lives and property remains our top priority,” Oke-Osanyintolu said. He added that the Sanwo-Olu administration has invested heavily in emergency preparedness and rapid response.
The state government is working with NNPCL to safely isolate the affected pipeline. A comprehensive integrity audit will be conducted before the facility is reactivated.
Residents and motorists were advised to avoid the Agege Motor Road corridor and use alternative routes including Old Abeokuta Road and the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. Authorities urged the public not to engage in panic buying of petroleum products, saying there was no immediate threat to fuel supply in Lagos.
Residents were also asked to report suspicious activity or vandalism around pipeline infrastructure via 767 or 112.
LASEMA said updates would be provided through its verified channels, with a post-incident assessment report released after the fire is extinguished and investigations conclude.
