2027 Race: NDC Zones Presidential Ticket To South For One Term

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria and limited it to a single four-year term, in a decision taken at its national convention.

The resolution followed a motion moved by Rep. Afam Victor Ogene of Anambra State and was endorsed by delegates.

The party also agreed that after the four-year tenure, the ticket would automatically shift to Northern Nigeria.

Party leaders explained that the move is aimed at balancing regional interests and strengthening internal cohesion ahead of the 2027 elections.

The decision clears the path for former Anambra Governor Peter Obi and other southern aspirants to contest for the NDC ticket.

Obi recently joined the party alongside former Kano Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, in a realignment observers say could reshape the opposition ahead of 2027.

While the party has not officially unveiled aspirants, Obi and Kwankwaso are seen as leading figures in its plans for the next election cycle.

Insiders say the zoning arrangement addresses long-standing concerns over equity, inclusion, and power rotation in Nigerian politics.

Analysts expect the decision to influence calculations and coalition talks among major parties ahead of 2027.
