Ganduje Denies Endorsing Sanusi, Says Remark Was Protocol

Former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has denied endorsing Muhammadu Sanusi II as Emir of Kano, saying his reference to Sanusi by title at a public event was purely a matter of protocol.

In a statement issued Wednesday by his Chief of Staff, Muhammad Garba, Ganduje said the comment was misinterpreted and should not be seen as a political endorsement.

“It is important to clarify that what happened was simply an expression of respect in a public gathering. It should not be misconstrued as an endorsement,” the statement read.

Ganduje explained that addressing Sanusi by his traditional title was consistent with standard courtesy at official functions and had no bearing on the ongoing emirship dispute.

He emphasised that the matter is still before the courts and only the Supreme Court can determine the final outcome. He urged all parties to avoid comments that could prejudice the legal process, noting the case is sub judice.

He recalled that the Court of Appeal had earlier directed all parties to maintain the status quo pending the Supreme Court’s verdict.

According to him, the current legal position recognises Aminu Ado Bayero as the 15th Emir of Kano, while Sanusi remains the 14th Emir until the apex court rules.

He added that he has no constitutional authority to endorse or reject any claimant, saying that responsibility lies with the judiciary and will be implemented by the Kano State Government.
