The Niger Electricity Distribution Company (NEDC) has supported the Niger State Government’s deployment of solar mini-grids and renewable energy projects aimed at expanding electricity access to underserved communities across the state.

Omede Odekina, Head, Brand Marketing and Corporate Communications, NEDC, who conveyed this on Tuesday, described the initiative of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago as a significant intervention to address long-standing power supply gaps, particularly in rural and previously unserved areas.

Over 180 communities that had experienced little or no electricity supply for over a decade are now benefiting from reliable 24-hour solar power under the programme,Odekina quoted in a statement.

The initiative also includes the transition of critical public facilities — such as the Government House, General Hospital, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Specialist Hospital, the Niger State Water Board and several ministries, departments and agencies — to independent solar systems.

The Managing Director of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC), Engr. Chijioke Okwuokenye, disclosed the company fully supports the state government’s proactive approach to expanding access to reliable electricity through renewable energy solutions.

He noted that the initiative complements the decentralised power framework introduced under the Electricity Act, which allows subnational governments to play a more active role in electricity generation, distribution and regulation.

Besides, Chief Business Officer and Acting Managing Director of NEDC, Engr. Sam Odekina, said the deployment of solar mini-grids in previously unserved areas aligns with the company’s objective of promoting inclusive electrification.

He explained that as the licensed intrastate electricity distributor under the Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NSERC), NEDC is ready to collaborate with the state government on hybrid energy solutions, grid integration where feasible, and other innovative projects to ensure sustainable power supply to residents and businesses.

The company also referenced mini-grid projects in communities such as Lambata in Gurara Local Government Area, implemented in partnership with the Rural Electrification Agency and international development partners, describing them as complementary to national efforts to expand renewable energy access.

It reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Niger State Government, NSERC and other stakeholders to deliver reliable and sustainable electricity supply across the state.

It added that areas of collaboration could include hybrid grid-renewable systems, commercially viable grid extensions, seamless integration of mini-grids under the state licensing regime, and public-private partnerships to accelerate electrification and economic development.
