The House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts has ordered the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) to remit N72 billion to the Federal Government within 60 days as part of its ongoing probe into the over N2.6 trillion debt owed by electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to the Federation Account.

The committee issued the order during a public hearing held on Wednesday in Abuja, chaired by Rep. Bamidele Salam, as it reviewed findings from the 2021 report of the Auditor-General of the Federation alongside documents provided by the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading (NBET) Plc.

According to NBET’s records,

Jos DisCo’s total indebtedness as of September 30, 2020, according to NBET’s record, was N161.7 billion.

The company clarified  that its outstanding balance had been reduced to N72 billion as of May 30, 2025.

NBET’s representative  told the committee that the reconciled figure stood at N98.7 billion as of the same period, indicating a disputed balance of N26.7 billion yet to be resolved between both parties.

The committee later ruled that the N72 billion confirmed by the company must be paid into the Federation Account within 60 days.

It further directed Jos DisCo and NBET to reconcile the disputed N26.7 billion within 21 days and submit a comprehensive report to the committee.

Its Chairman,  Rep. Bamidele Salam emphasized that the era of disregard for financial obligations by operators in the power sector was over.

“These are public funds, and the government urgently requires them to discharge its responsibilities. We expect full compliance and accountability from all concerned parties,” Salam added.

Besides, the committee ordered the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) to remit N40.7 billion, representing 50 percent of its verified N81.5 billion debt, within 30 days.

The lawmakers directed KEDCO to present proof of payment of the N40.7 billion within 30 days and conclude the reconciliation of the outstanding N4.3 billion within 21 days for submission to the committee.
