The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike, has  vowed severe consequences for vandals who damaged and stole transmission cables, plunging over 60% of Abuja into darkness.

At a media chat on Sunday,Wike disclosed that some suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime, which he described as an act of economic sabotage.

He added:“They vandalised and stole the cables, leaving over 60% of Abuja in darkness. Sabotage!” Wike said. “By the grace of God, the security agencies are on top of the matter. We’ve arrested some of them, and I can assure you, all those involved will face the full wrath of the law. They will not escape accountability, and people will learn lessons from it.”

He emphasized that the suspects would not face charges of simple theft but economic sabotage, given the gravity of their actions on the stability of the capital city.

“Enough is enough. Nobody who loves this country can accept what is going on,” Wike declared. “We won’t charge you with stealing; we will charge you with economic sabotage. Nobody will take this lightly.”

Wike implored FCT residents to actively participate in safeguarding the city by reporting suspicious activities to the authorities.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing the issue and preventing future occurrences, urging the public to cooperate with security agencies to protect critical infrastructure.
