Two siblings of Beyero dynasty, Aminu Ado Bayero, and Nasiru Ado Bayero were stripped of the crown of their forefathers on Thursday following the abrogation of Kano emirates council law (repeal bill) 2024.
Both Bayero’s siblings were appointed as emir of Kano, and Bichi respectively by the former governor of the state, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in 2020.
Other first class monarch that lost out in this new order are Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, Kabiru Muhammad Inuwa, and Ibrahim Abubakar II of Gaya, Rano, and Karaye emirate.
The law which created five new emirates was first assented to by ex-Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on December 5, 2019.
Dr. Ganduje further assented to an amendment to the law on 14 October, 2020 and signed another amendment on 11 April, 2023.
Accordingly, section 3(1) of the law established five distinct emirates; Kano, Bichi, Rano, Gaya and Karaye, with Kano and Karaye having eight local government areas of jurisdiction each, while Bichi and Gaya emirates share 9 local government areas of jurisdiction each, Rano Emirate enjoys jurisdiction over 10 local government areas out of the 44 local councils in the state.
The Kano state emirate council amendment bill was considered on the floor of the house after scaling second and third reading on Thursday morning.
The House also adopted a motion to create new second class emirate council in the state.
Earlier, the deputy speaker, Alhaji Muhammad Bello Butu Butu explained that repealing the law would revive the lost glory of Kano as the division of Kano emirate to five reduced the capacity and dignity of the state at national level.
The majority leader, Alhaji Lawan Hussaini Dala stated that the emirate council served as a custodian of culture which was distorted by the creation of additional emirates by the last administration.
