The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), ‘A’ Division Awka, has been removed from office following complaints that his men invaded, arrested and extorted innocent passers-by at the Aroma area of the state capital on Tuesday.
Commenting on the removal of the DPO, the new p Commissioner of Police Aderemi Adeoye, said he cannot tolerate his men going against the rule of the game and against the
the Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun’s directive, and the resuscitated ‘Commissioner of Police Commendation Awards’ aimed at spurring officers to greatness.
He added: “We will never tolerate harassment or extortion of the public.We will not tolerate where our men go to bus stops, and when people returning from work, drinking joints, beer parlours and arresting people who are trying to drown their hardship with a bottle of beer.
“Somebody who does not earn N20,000 a month and you ask him to pay N20,000 for bail. We condemn such conduct and we will descend hard on any Officer involved in such malfeasance”.
He said that despite the removal of the DPO, investigation is still on and in the end, if the allegations are proved further sanctions will apply to those involved.
Adeoye added: “Under my watch, no one will harass you anywhere in Anambra State. I had a conference with DPOs, Area Commanders and made it abundantly clear. What Am telling you and I have mandated them to go back and lecture their men because there will be no excuse for misconduct just as there will be handsome reward for any of them that performed gallantly that go out of his way to make the burden of the people lighter”
