The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has warned of heavy rains in Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Bauchi and Plateau states.
The agency said the three days heavy rain would fall throughout the aforementioned states, starting from Friday, August 27 to Sunday, August, 29, 2021.
NiMET in a statement signed by Prof. Mnsur Matazu, its Director-General, also warned of moderate heavy rainfall over parts of Sokoto, Katsina, Zramfara, Yobe, Borno, Gombe, Adamawa, Kebbi, Niger and Kwara states.
The statement also said Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Ogun, Lagos, Taraba, Benue, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, FCT, Kogi, Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta and some other states that would witness moderate rainfall within the three days period.
It further stated that light rains were expected over the rest of the country.
It observed that the heavy rains may lead to road crashes, reduced visibility and destruction of farmlands across the country.
According to the statement : “As a result of the presence of good amount of soil-moisture and the heavy rainfall expected over the aforementioned States, there are increased chances of flashflood events on roads, settlements, farmlands and bridges, there are also chances of reduced horizontal visibility, which can disrupt vehicular traffic and flight operations.
“Hence, the public is advised to exercise restraint, avoid low-lying areas and fast flowing runoff waters. There are chances of moderate to heavy rainfall events especially over the northern parts of the country, leading to slippery roads, reducing travel time, with increased likelihood of cars skidding off the road and chances of crashes.
“It can also disrupt outdoor events and farming activities. Hence, the public is advised to be prepared for these events to avoid damages from rain-related hazard and watch out for updates. Elsewhere, no hydrometeorological hazards are anticipated.”
