COVID-19:FG Wields Big Sticks On 90 Air Passengers

The Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on COVID-19 has reprimanded and placed on watchlist 90 air passengers who visited Turkey, Brazil and India .
The violators whose names have been published in a number of national dailies are believed to have arrived Nigeria from Brazil, India and Turkey but flouted the mandatory 7days post travel isolation and retesting.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee, Boss Mustapha who approved the release of the names, disclosed that the under listed persons who arrived in Nigeria between 8th May 2021 and 15th May 2021 through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe
International Airport, Abuja and whose names and passport numbers are displayed, have been declared Persons of Interest (POI) on account of posing considerable danger to overall public health and for the violation of Nigeria COVID-19 travel protocol by evading the mandatory 7-day quarantine for persons arriving from restricted countries.
He warned that members of the public are by this notice advised that these persons of interest constitute an immediate health hazard to the society.
He said the erring passengers  must therefore transport themselves safely, to the
nearest state public health departments within 48hrs of this notice for immediate evaluation and call the Port Health Services, Federal Ministry of Health on 08036134672 or 08032461990  for further directions.
He explained that these precautionary measures are a necessary step to mitigate the risk of importation of variants of concern and break the chain of transmission to the population.
“Under the new measures, passengers arriving from/or that have visited any of these three countries within fourteen (14) days prior to the visit to Nigeria, are required to follow mandatory  arrival quarantine and testing protocols in designated facilities.
“The Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) has however observed that while most of the arriving passengers dutifully observed the guidelines, some (Nigerians and Foreigners) have  violated them in contravention of the provisions of the Coronavirus health regulations protection 2021.
“The PSC shall in addition, take further steps to sanction these violators. These steps include: Disabling their travel passports for a period not less than one year; cancelation of visas/ permits of foreigners that have abused our hospitality; and prosecution under the 2021 Health Protection Regulations.
“Additional list of Batch II defaulters shall be published in subsequent announcement by the PSC, “Boss noted late Sunday night.
Meanwhile,Minister of State for Petroleum Resources,Timipre Sylva, has said that Nigeria will not entertain attendees from Brazil,India,Turkey or passengers transiting from the countries at this year’s Nigeria International Petroleum Summit (N.I.P.S) will scheduled to hold between  June 6th and 10th.

“The committee saddled with the organization of the event under my leadership will ensure that there will be no attendee(s) from Turkey, Brazil, India or anyone transiting from those countries”, said Timipre Sylva, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources.
“In addition to all the structures we have put in place, we have trained Special Covid-19 Marshals to ensure that attendees adhere strictly to all COVID-19 protocols. We have also made provision for qualified doctors, supporting medics and ambulances at the event venue throughout the duration of the event”, said James Shindi, chief executive of Brevity Anderson, the producers of the event.
The opening ceremony of the event and the opening day dinner will take place as the State House Banquet Hall in the Presidential Villa with President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR delivering the opening speech. Also in attendance will be industry chief executives and other key lstakeholders.
The theme of the summit, “From crisis to opportunities: New approaches to the future of hydrocarbons” aims at charting the way forward for Africa’s oil and gas industry in the post-Covid-19 pandemic era.
The scope of NIPS 2021 has been expanded to incorporate the latest industry trends and topical issues that are at the forefront of every energy leader’s agenda. It has also become the platform for industry players for the public and private sectors to interact, transact and develop agenda for government and support Nigeria’s role in galvanising other global players in addressing challenges in the industry.
The Nigeria International Petroleum Summit (N.I.P.S) is a program of the Federal Government of Nigeria, under the supervision of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and all its parastatals including the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Nigeria Content Development & Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) are joint hosts.
